Rock cabaret Everything is Sh*t is raw and musically impressive, an enjoyable hour of story and song that doesn’t quite transcend to the greater meaning to which it aspires.

Andy Freeborn’s nomadic childhood and unstable family dynamics have given them a lot to think about. As they enter their thirties they reflect on their experiences in adolescence and their twenties, like therapy, wine and music, that have shaped the adult they’ve become. With bohemian rugs and an eclectic group of on-stage friends including vocalists, orchestral players, and bandmates, Freeborn engages us in a loungeroom session about growing up and finding your way.

Freeborn’s musical talents are on full display throughout the show, their vocal style and piano mastery reminiscent of Tim Minchin in a wonderfully Australiana way. Supported by compelling arrangements by drummer Austin Hall that comprise vocalists, guitar, brass, woodwind and string instruments, songs including the Wine Song and the eponymous Everything is Sh*t (But, it will be okay) fill the room with their compelling melodies and messages. Creative producer and performer Ren McMeiken is featured in a couple of songs, the gentle Baby Girl the standout among them.

It’s an impressive original score despite some inconsistencies in sound production that, at times, saw the orchestral instruments drowned out by the piano, guitar and drums. Where the show could use a little bit of polish is the way in which the various anecdotes thread together. The self-described ‘story with no arcs,’ struggled to move beyond Freeborn’s own introspections to find broader meaning – but in the moments it did, it really resonated.

A thoroughly enjoyable cabaret with enormous promise, and a wonderful night of music.

Merlot | Wine Pairing

Merlot is a classic loungeroom session wine; it feels more sophisticated than a white wine, but it isn’t too rich for a still-developing wine palate or the inevitable late night pizza.

My Pick: Neverland NV South Australian Merlot, McLaren Vale, SA

The juicy ripe fruit notes and velvety tannin of this Peter Pan inspired bottle strike a lovely balance between holding onto the naivety of youth and appreciating all that comes with growing up.
