SHITTY, Essential Workers Theatre for Belvoir 25A | Review

No matter how badly things ended with your ex, I promise you the crew from SHITTY has had it worse. You’ll laugh until your sides split in this horror-comedy anthology that explores just how horrifying it can be to fall in love.

Almost everyone will have a story or two involving embarrassing hook-ups or drunken karaoke. A few will be able to recount affairs and relationships becoming a little nightmarish, and rarely will you hear of a haunting, possession, demon and seance… but it’s just another day in the life of the lovebirds in this three-story show.

SHITTY is a great story for those who want to like horror, but just can’t quite get rid of their heebie-jeebies (aka me). Writing by Chris Edwards draws you in with a deceptively normal-seeming opening number, and as it gets gorier you’re laughing so much that you don’t mind! Zoë Hollyoak’s direction achieves an incredibly polished production that sees the set design, sound and lighting work in unison to thrill and terrify.

Without giving too much away about the plot, each of the cast shines in their respective roles. Meg Hyeronimus as Emily and Roy Joseph as Darcy excel as a comedic duo, while Mark Paguio as Frankie and Ariadne Sgouros as Evie really show their chops in their scarier scenes. Levi Kenway sits somewhere in the middle, bringing a sinister air to all his scenes that still manages to make you giggle.

There is so much to love about this show; it’s a reminder of the innovation and entertainment that comes out of providing space for indie artists to produce their works, the mission of Belvoir 25A. Go on, take a chance and swipe right – what’s the worst that could happen?

Pinot Noir | Wine Pairing

Horror and a gamey, blood-red wine just go together, right? Pinot Noir is light enough to appreciate the laughs and robust enough to withstand it when things start to go downhill. As for the gamey flavour – you’ll need to see SHITTY to see why that’s important.

My Pick: Upton Run and Billis NV Fowles Are You Game Pinot Noir, Strathbogie Ranges, VIC

A delightful and not at all scery or doomed relationship of ripe red berry fruits and savoury notes of game and earth. Gather all your courage and RUN… towards the nearest glass.
