A celebration of women’s storytelling through voice, song, movement, and listening, out of which you will emerge enriched and inspired.
Embellishment is a pretty special evening of storytelling that was created by Voices of Women to provide opportunities for First Nations and diverse women across Australia and internationally to develop monologues through community workshops, grassroots regional tours and open call outs. Described as a ‘collage’ of monologue, music and movement, writers and performers revel in their chosen mediums.
The talent is immense and diverse; Lucy Heffernans’s performance of Sarah Strong’s The Date and Louise Hopewell’s Sweetie, recounting the cringiest parts of first dates, and working in hospitality, has you chortling, Heffernan’s comedic timing on point as always; Aunty Cheryl Penrith’s advice for women, and open ownership of grief and family provide welcome contemplative moments; Hasitha Adhikariarachchi sees the performers take their seats to listen to her vocal performance piece speaking out against the treatment of women in South-east Asia during menstruation; and Ahunim Abebe grounds the experience of motherhood through a memorable performance of Soul Care Motel by writer Jeannine DeHoney.
Neutral clothing, a boho rug and a trolley of bits and bobs to be brought out when called for create a warm, welcoming environment, complemented by timely mood music from saxophonist Alice Morgan.
There are so many talented people with stories and performers just waiting for opportunity; Embellishment is what independent theatre is all about, and I hope there will be many seasons to come.

Rosé | Wine Pairing
If you’ve seen Barbie recently you know that pink is powerful, so pink it is for this powerhouse of women’s storytelling.

My Pick: Trentham Estate 2022 Sangiovese Rosé, Mildura, NSW
Rosés made from Sangiovese or Tempranillo possess a striking balance of lush, red fruit flavours like strawberry and purple grapes, high acid, and just enough texture to make it interesting. This drop, made from Sangiovese, offers up a beautiful example of just this balance.
