A life model who’s also a drag queen, the quiet sound of people contentedly running their pencils over sketchpads, and a cheeky burlesque solo in the middle. What’s not to love about Bondi Festival’s collaboration with Gladdy Drawing Club?
The Lord Gladstone Hotel has brought its weekly life inclusive and body-positive life drawing class to Bondi Festival, with a special Festival twist. Each event across the season boasts its own secret ingredient, with line-ups including burlesque performances and drag. The night I attended, I was treated to a performance by drag performer Lady Fur.
Not your typical theatre show, this really was an art class – a little nerve wracking for people like me who are a lot better with words than pictures! But what a warm and welcoming environment it was. For those with minimal artistic instincts or education, it may be a little startling as no instruction is provided on how to approach sketching, but I gave it my best go and had a lovely time testing my drawing instincts and trying different approaches throughout the class. The class offers structure and redemption through strict timing for each pose by the model, starting with two-minute long poses and building up to ten-minutes. A timely mid-way drink let everyone flex their fingers and relax before a burlesque-style performance by our model Lady Fur, and a little more drawing before finishing up.
For anyone missing a creative outlet, or keen to give life drawing a try, get yourself down to Lord Gladstone Hotel on a Tuesday soon and see what you can create!
Rosé | Wine Pairing
Rosé is the summer garden of wines, perfect for sipping while you sit by a lake and sketch. No deeper meaning, I just think that sounds idyllic.

My Pick: Mr Mick Rosé, Clare Valley, SA
This Rosé uses Sangiovese and Tempranillo grapes, giving it a bigger body lush with flavours like strawberry, lychee and peach.
