Tash York’s Happy Hour, Bondi Festival | Review

In a dimly lit room filled with an intoxicating cloud of alcohol, sass and debauchery, Tash York’s Happy Hour encourages anyone and everyone to embrace their inner cabaret queen.

Seeking to help us appreciate all the wonderful things in life, York and supporting performers Peppy Smears and Vivian Fonteyn, or the ‘Red Red Wines’, encourage you to escape the real word for a little while in exchange for dirty jokes, belted renditions of pop anthems, and an impressive amount of improv.

York’s talent lies in her boundless enthusiasm for improvisation and audience engagement. Not only does it mean you will always get a different show, but you also get to be part of making it. Her main song, based on the things that audience members say ‘grinds their gears,’ and her ‘Cat Rap’ (yes, a song all about cats) showcase her impressive ability to manipulate the English language any which way she needs.

The Red Red wines and their vintage vaudeville vibes are a force in their own right, verbally sparking with York and each other, getting the audience involved and performing bits and songs of their own. I particularly enjoyed their song asking Disney to create a gay leading character for their animated movie collection, and their constant peppering of York with risqué jokes.

Costuming throughout is for the most part classic cabaret, with tight dresses, sequins and big hair dominating. Lighting and set up is the same, bright red lighting and cabaret tables setting the scene.

Shiraz| Wine Pairing

Bold, spicy, full bodied and high alcohol – need I say more?

My Pick: Jacob’s Creek Double Barrel Shiraz, Barossa Valley, SA

This already punchy Shiraz is aged in whisky barrels to add a little extra oomph, which I think Tash would approve of.
